CECILIE FANG

‘At the end of the sentence, it rotted’ is a performing sound installation reflecting upon the diasporic conditions of language. The work explores the mutability of language and how words can exclude and include. Through bio-asemic rust and decay, it searches for a language that includes all, as the installation is constantly transformed. A live soundscape transforms writing strokes into sound. It is a return to a time of pre-linguistics, where sound and touch are prominent. To return to a time before words became the dominant way of communicating.

Cecilie describes herself as an anti-disciplinary artist and writer. She grew up between China and Denmark, and is currently based in The Hague. Her practice is a continuous auto-ethnographic exploration, where she researches power structures through and with language. Growing up between different countries and tongues, she is interested in the diasporic conditions of language—what power resides in literacy and what silences emerge from the inability to speak.

Through micro performances of materials and their organic processes, Cecilie is able to reflect on alternative ways of languaging, seeing meaning-making not as fixed but as open-ended and process-oriented. Her work aims to explore speculative linguistic ecosystems, inviting others to question and reimagine how language, power, and understanding intertwine.
